چکیده

Educational Qualifications and Wage Inequality: Evidence for Europe This paper explores the connection between education and wage inequality in nine European countries. We exploit the quantile regression technique to calculate returns to lower secondary, upper secondary and tertiary education at different points of the wage distribution. We find that returns to tertiary education are highly increasing when moving from the lower to the upper quantiles. This finding suggests that an educational expansion towards tertiary education is expected, ceteris paribus, to increase overall wage inequality through the withindimension. Returns to secondary education are more homogeneous across quantiles, thus suggesting that an educational expansion towards secondary education is expected to have a more limited impact on within-groups dispersion. Using data from the last decades, we assess how the impact of education on wage inequality has evolved over time. We detect different trends across countries. A common feature is that the inequality increasing effect of tertiary education became more acute over the last years. JEL Classification: C29, D31, I21

The Educational Transition and Decreasing Wage Inequality in Chile

The wage of the 90th (richest) percentile of the wage distribution in Chile increased faster than the median wage and the wage of the 10th percentile between 1975 and 1990. By contrast, from 1990 onwards the wage of the 10th percentile and the median wage grew faster than the 90th percentile. This is one of many findings showing that wage inequality in Chile has been falling, first slowly, then...

Does Education Reduce Wage Inequality? Quantile Regressions Evidence from Fifteen European Countries

Does Education Reduce Wage Inequality? Quantile Regressions Evidence from Fifteen European Countries We address the impact of education upon wage inequality by drawing on evidence from fifteen European countries, during a period ranging between 1980 and 1995. We focus on within-educational-levels wage inequality by estimating quantile regressions of Mincer equations and analysing the difference...

Wage Inequality, Outsourcing, and Education

We present a simple model to explain why wage inequality in the U.S. increased in the 1980s but decreased in the 1970s, in which we argue that educational investment might deteriorate wage inequality temporarily, but permanently decrease it. A country would not necessarily present the Kuznets inversed-U curve if having sufficient educational investment. Acceleration in the educational investmen...

An Impact of Globalization on Gender Wage Inequality: A case Study of Selected Developing Countries

Globalization may have different impacts on the gender wage gap depending on the specialization and trade pattern as well as the socio-economic situation. The main purpose of this paper is to examine an impact of globalization on gender wage inequality. Specifically, the hypothesis is that globalization reduces gender wage gap. For this, we have employed a panel technique for 21 selected develo...

No 652 September 2004 Labor Market Institutions , Wages and Investment Jörn - Steffen

Labor market institutions, via their effect on the wage structure, affect the investment decisions of firms in labor markets with frictions. This observation helps explain rising wage inequality in the US, but a relatively stable wage structure in Europe in the 1980s. These different trends are the result of different investment decisions by firms for the jobs typically held by less skilled wor...
